Call from the faraway, Markus Bacher, 2014-2016

1969 opens our doors with an exhibition of new artworks by three emerging painters – Tom Anholt, Markus Bacher and Alexander Kroll – and a special commission of sculptures  by Chris Taylor.

The 13 selected paintings show the vibrant, dynamic and still-endless possibilities of abstract and representational painting. The color spectrum is presented in its full array of hues - the brush strokes run in all directions with confidence and spontaneity - the canvasses shine with dots, spots, plops, slops and pops - or what is the sound of one hand painting?

Tom Anholt, born 1987, lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Recent exhibitions include a solo presentation at VOLTA NY with Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen, and a solo show at Project B Gallery, Milan, as well as an upcoming show at Eigen+Art Lab, Berlin.

Chris Taylor was born in Tehran, Iran and lived in Argentina, Spain, Manila, Oman, Mexico, Belgium, Ivory Coast and Honduras, all before he was twenty. He has been awarded fellowships and grants from the National Endowment of The Arts, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The New York Foundation on the Arts and Rhode Island School of Design. He has been an artist in residence at the Glasmuseum, Denmark, The Tacoma Museum of Glass, Kitengela Glass Nairobi, Kenya, Shandong University of Arts and Design Jinan City, Peoples Republic of China, Nagoya University of Art Nagoya, Japan, and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mass. His works have been exhibited at ArtSpace (New Haven), Real Art Ways (Hartford), Artists Space (New York) and Exit Art (New York). His social practice is an attempt to find a critical way of working that engages wider audiences and situations beyond just art institutions, as a method for the dissemination of ideas and as a political statement.  His work exploits nuances of a tradition and process that is often exclusively preconceived as conventional, historical and decorative.

1969 is a new, contemporary art gallery devoted to painting. Through solo / group exhibitions and events in our 1,200 square-feet gallery space and publications that offer an art historical context for understanding contemporary ideas and practices, the gallery opens our doors in the bustling art district of New York’s Lower East Side.
